“Staying Awake in the Wake” – Sunday, January 24, 2021
Staying centered behind the boat while waterskiing keeps you out of the wake which can topple you over. It’s an excellent metaphor for how vital it is to stay centered in the present moment when life presents us with a wake or roiling experience. It’s vital because the present moment is where God is, and God intends for us to live a life of beauty and wholeness, and balance.
“I don’t know if it is human nature or the way of life on Earth, but we seldom become all of who we are until forced to it. Some say that something in us rises to the occasion, that there is, as Hemingway called it, ‘a grace under pressure’ that comes forth in most of us when challenged. Others say this talk of grace is merely a way to rationalize hard times and painful experience, a way to put a good face on tragedy…
“We are often called further into experience than we’d like to go, but it is this extra leap that lands us in the vibrant center of what it means to be alive.” Mark Nepo. The Book of Awakening, p. 58
Often, instead of remaining centered in the present moment, we find ourselves spinning in the wake, in the “What ifs?” and “Oh nos.” This is a form of being asleep, or being in the “Why me?” or “Victim” stage of consciousness. There are many things in our world today that can cause us to feel the spin, but being in a spin about them will not bring about anything you want.
In the book, Inside-Out Healing: Transforming Your Life Through the Power of Presence, Richard Moss tells us that our true suffering, way beyond physical suffering, comes when we hold on to our stories about whatever the situation is and move either into the future or the past about it. What happened? What might happen? Rather than how might I respond in this NOW moment? The way to minimize, if not eliminate, the suffering is to return again and again and again to the present moment.
Why? Because God lives in the present moment! God’s Love abounds in the present moment. The Energy of Life convenes in the present moment. Divine Intelligence lives in the present moment. Wholeness exists in the present moment. And we have only to return to being centered in the present moment to REALise this.
“The mystics have taught that there is but One Ultimate Reality; and that this Ultimate Reality is here and NOW . . . . The great mystics . . . saw through the veil of matter and perceived the Spiritual Universe. They have taught that the Kingdom of God is now present, and needs but to be
REAL-ized!” Ernest Holmes, The Science of Mind.
Every instant we are fully awake and present to the present moment is a moment of restoring ourselves to wholeness and balance. Because when we turn our attention away from our stories and return to the present moment, we enter a limitless field of Intelligence & Love that is the greatest healing resource of all.
The atoms, the molecules, the cells of our bodies actually reorganize themselves in greater or lesser degrees of wholeness according to how present we actually are. (paraphrased from p. 1, Inside-Out Healing by Richard Moss.)
Simple tools for Staying Awake in the Wake:
* Focusing on the breath
* Heart-brain coherence, which is breathing through the heart and focusing on the feelings of joy and peace
* Affirmative prayer
* Actively promoting an awakened world through acts of love and peace.
